Burrillville residents petition the Town to ban Data Centers through zoning amendments
The Issue
Enbridge’s proposed expansion of Algonquin Natural Gas Pipeline puts Burrillville at immediate risk of Data Center development
• Algonquin owns 764 acres on Wallum Lake Rd.
• There was an expansion in 2014 to the major regional powerline.
Burrillville residents have ALREADY experienced water supply and contamination issues. Permitting data centers would risk making them worse by
• Excessive use of water
• Air pollution
• Noise pollution
• Light pollution
The Nature Conservancy is the world’s largest conservation organization. During the Invenergy power plant hearings we learned that the regional forest that Burrillville is a part of, would particularly suffer from that kind of pollution
We have a clear roadmap on this:
May 5th, 2026, the Smithfield Town Council amended its zoning laws to establish a district definition for data centers and a prohibition of them in each of its zoning districts.
Burrillville residents seek a proactive amendment to Chapter 30 (zoning ordinance) to define "Data Centers" and classify them as "NOT PERMITTED" across all zoning districts, using the precautionary regulatory framework enacted by the Town of Smithfield.
Burrillville must act NOW before a developer submits a formal application. Smithfield acted after the fact of a developer's application so that the application remains alive.
Please join me in petitioning the Town Council to direct the Planning Board and Town Solicitor to immediately draft and introduce identical protective zoning language for Burrillville.
