Create a deterrent to make Gannow Top Motorway Bridge safer
The Issue
The M65 Junction 10 motorway bridge has been a tempting spot for suicides and attempted suicides for as long as I can remember. However, more and more recently, we have seen people contemplating or committing suicide by climbing onto the wrong side of the motorway bridge. Whether they jump or whether it is a cry for help, to be low enough to even stand on the other side is heart-breaking, terrifying!
In April 2010 Council Leader Charlie Briggs was going to talk to the highways department about a deterrent on this bridge and 11 years on, nothing has changed.
To build a fall safety net or higher barriers and/or a Samaritans telephone on this bridge would stop or deter someone from being able to climb on or over the railings. This would not only save that persons life, and the suffering of their families, it would reduce the trauma of the drivers on the motorway, the passers by and the emergency services that are having to deal with this all too often.
Of course this won't stop people from committing suicide, but it will reduce their options, it is one less way!
