Stop Burbank Unified School District's Ban on Anti-Racist Books

The Issue

As the National Coalition Against Censorship reports this month, Burbank Unified School District is in the midst of considering a ban on classic, anti-racist literature. Among the titles affected would be To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and The Cay.

These books, which have historically served as an introduction to critical race theory for tens of thousands of students in our District, are now at risk. The District, breaking its own guidelines, has temporarily banned them while considering the ban. Time is running out - the District will set its decision in stone soon.

In a time where racism has become more transparent than ever, we need to continue to educate students as to the roots of it; to create anti-racist students. These literatures, of which have been declared "Books that Shaped America" by the Library of Congress, won Newbury Medals, and are some of the most influential pieces, cannot disappear.

If you stand against censorship, and fight for virtue over comfort, we ask that you sign.
