Change JBHS Racist “mascot”

The Issue

At John Burroughs High School in Burbank, the “mascot” is an Indian which is obviously very racially insensitive and extremely outdated. Their attempt, or excuse of honoring celebrations of Native American heroism are not only misguided, but offensive. It is also undoubtedly tied to this nation’s history of racism, therefore students are ashamed to be part of a school who upholds this belief. The least the Burbank Unified School District could do is change their mascot, as Native Americans are still heavily discriminated against in the United States.
