Nicky Boehm started this petition to Bundesrat (Petitionsstelle) and

In the week when it was announced that a swine flu virus with 'pandemic potential' has been identified in China by scientists, I am calling on the German government to reconsider their 3 July 2020 vote on how long pregnant and mother sows can be kept in stalls and farrowing crates and suggesting that the German Federal agriculture ministry offer an increased economic stimulus package to pig farmers so that they can transition to cage free breeding centres.

There are approximately 1.9 million sows in Germany – almost all of them caged. The majority spend nearly half of every year inside crates, in which they cannot even turn around.

Scientists consider pigs to be important hosts or “mixing vessels” for pandemic influenza viruses.  Intensive farming practices are notorious breeding grounds for bacteria, viruses and diseases that not only threaten human health but the world economy. The past month has shown how the working and living conditions for people employed in the meat processing industry make them uniquely vulnerable to being infected with the coronavirus and The World Bank has said that "COVID-19 has triggered the deepest global recession in decades".  Furthermore they are a major contributor to the climate crisis and cause immense suffering to sentient beings that have a superior cognitive ability than dogs and three-year-olds according to Dr. Donald Broom, emeritus professor of animal welfare at Cambridge University.

Confining pregnant and mother sows to stalls and farrowing crates so small that they can't even turn around has no place in modern livestock farming and is already completely banned in Sweden and in the UK.
