The Issue

In the past three years, I've witnessed the heartbreaking sight of countless deceased deer, raccoons, and other wildlife along Highway 17. This highway, which stretches through beautiful natural landscapes, has become a danger zone for these innocent animals, forced into deadly contact with vehicles due to a lack of safe crossing paths. It's a tragedy unfolding daily, and it needs to change.

Highway 17, running through Santa Cruz Mountains in California, intersects the natural habitats of diverse wildlife. This critical corridor has become a perilous barrier, fragmenting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity. Currently, there are no designated wildlife crossings on this busy thoroughfare, leaving animals with no choice but to cross at their own risk. This negligence results in hundreds of unnecessary animal fatalities each year, putting not only wildlife at risk but also endangering human drivers.

Studies indicate that wildlife crossings don't just save animal lives; they also reduce vehicle-wildlife crashes by up to 90%. Success stories from other states, such as Colorado and Montana, where similar structures have been implemented, prove their effectiveness. A wildlife crossing on Highway 17 could be a game-changer—protecting the area's rich biodiversity and preventing tragic accidents.

Constructing wildlife passages and bridges is an achievable goal. The integration of these structures involves an initial investment but promises long-term economic savings and safety benefits. Federal and state funding, coupled with support from conservation organizations, can provide the necessary resources for this essential project. Collaborative efforts with environmental scientists and transportation authorities can design tailored solutions that fit the unique landscape of the region.

For many of us who travel this road frequently, the image of lifeless animals on the pavement is a haunting reminder of our responsibility to coexist with nature. The implementation of wildlife bridges or tunnels on Highway 17 will not only honor this duty but also preserve the natural heritage of California's wildlife.

Let's urge the California Department of Transportation to prioritize the construction of wildlife crossings on Highway 17 by signing this petition. Each signature brings us closer to a safer environment where humans and wildlife can coexist peacefully. Please join me in advocating for these life-saving measures.
