The Issue

The Stoogz Committee, founded in 2019 by a group of skaters, is dedicated to honoring the memory of Tyrelle Drew Augustine of Esgenoopetitj First Nation. We've held approximately 10 events to celebrate his life and raise awareness about Men's Mental Health & Suicide Prevention.

We aim to raise the necessary funds to construct a memorial skatepark, dedicated to Tyrelle Drew Augustine, for the community of Esgenoopetitj First Nation.

We are committed to building a memorial skatepark for our community, in Tyrelle Drew Augustine's name, to provide a positive space and help create a brighter future for our youth.

Envision a vibrant concrete skatepark! The estimated cost is $55 per square foot. A 3,000 square foot park would have an approximate cost of $150,000, with the final price influenced by the specific custom features.

To bring this vision to life, we're aiming to raise $25,000 as an initial investment. This crucial step will empower us to present a strong proposal to our community leaders and secure essential government funding.

Building a skatepark in our community can have a multitude of benefits for both the community and the youth. Here are some compelling reasons to consider:

  1. Promotes Physical Activity: Skateparks encourage kids and teens to engage in physical exercise, which is essential for their health and well-being. Activities like skating, scootering, and BMX riding help improve fitness levels and motor skills.

  2. Fosters Social Interaction: Skateparks serve as vibrant social hubs where young people can meet, interact, and build friendships. This environment helps develop vital social skills and fosters a sense of community.

  3. Enhances Mental Well-being: Engaging in physical activities like skating can reduce stress and anxiety. Skateparks provide a positive outlet for youth to express themselves and channel their energy creatively.

  4. Supports Local Economy: A well-designed skatepark can attract visitors and events, benefiting local businesses. Increased foot traffic can lead to more sales for nearby shops and restaurants, boosting the local economy.

  5. Encourages Inclusivity: Skateparks can be designed to accommodate all skill levels and ages, making them accessible to everyone. This inclusivity promotes a sense of belonging and community spirit.

Revitalizes Urban Spaces: A skatepark can transform underutilized areas into vibrant community spaces, enhancing the overall quality of life in the neighborhood. It can also attract families and visitors, contributing to community pride.

  6. Provides a Safe Environment: Having a designated space for skating reduces the likelihood of youth skating in unsafe areas, such as streets or parking lots. A skatepark offers a safe and controlled environment for them to practice their skills.

  7. Encourages Youth Engagement: Involving young people in the planning and design of the skatepark can empower them and give them a sense of ownership. This engagement can lead to increased community involvement and responsibility.
