The Issue

Many residents of Richland County find themselves traveling to neighboring Lexington County just to enjoy the sport they love – pickleball. One of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, offering a fun and engaging way for people of all ages to stay active and socialize. However, despite its growing popularity, Richland County and City of Columbia residents are limited in public facilities which are inadequate to accommodate the growing number of Picklers.

Lexington County, on the other hand, has embraced this trend, boasting numerous courts and complexes. This disparity forces Richland County residents to commute unnecessarily, depriving them of the convenience and joy of having local facilities to engage in the sport. Building public pickleball courts in Richland County and the City would not only cater to current players but also encourage new participants, fostering community spirit and promoting physical health among its residents.

The lack of sufficient pickleball facilities in Richland County hinders the ability to host local tournaments and community events that could bring people together, generate revenue, and increase tourism. To support the ever-growing community of pickleball enthusiasts, we propose the construction of multiple public pickleball courts across various strategic locations in Columbia and elsewhere in Richland County.

A strong commitment from local government and community planners, along with potential partnerships with private organizations, could make this dream a reality. Securing funding through grants or community-driven fundraising initiatives can also significantly contribute to the project.

By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for the development of public pickleball courts in Richland County and City of Columbia. Let's ensure that our community can enjoy easy access to their favorite sport without having to leave the county. Your signature can make a difference and bring positive change to our community.
