Build Pickleball Courts for Union City, CA
The Issue
Dear City Council Members, City Manager and Recreation Manager of Union City,
We, the undersigned Union City residents, are writing to petition the city to build or convert tennis courts into pickleball courts.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in recent years. Due to the gaining popularity, many cities across the country have already built dedicated pickleball courts to accommodate the high demand. However, our city currently does not have any pickleball courts to meet the needs of the community. Many of our residents have to travel to neighboring cities to play.
We believe that the conversion of tennis courts into pickleball courts would be the most cost-effective and fastest solution to this problem. Tennis courts are already equipped with the necessary infrastructure, such as fencing and lighting, and can be easily converted to accommodate pickleball lines and posts. Dual purpose courts with pickleball lines drawn on tennis courts do not work well and can result in duals among tennis and pickleball players.
Pickleball is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, making it a valuable addition to our city's recreational offerings. By converting tennis courts into pickleball courts, the city can promote healthy, active lifestyles and provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the community. The area of one tennis court can build 4 pickleball courts. Sixteen pickleball players can enjoy the facility space that four tennis players can get. The return of recreational investment is high with pickleball courts.
Description of City project No. 22-22 is to renovate Veterans Memorial Park tennis and basketball courts. We request that the conversion of 2 tennis courts into 8 pickleball courts be included in the project. A bid opening is scheduled for Thursday 4/27. We also request the work order for the bid be changed to include 2 tennis courts conversion into pickleball courts prior to the open bid on 4/27. We appreciate your attention to this matter and thank you for your continued dedication to improving the quality of life for our community.
