The Issue

On Route State 7 near SUNY Cobleskill, pedestrian safety is a significant concern. The area is known for high-speed traffic, making it challenging and dangerous for pedestrians to cross the road safely. This situation has led to multiple accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. One of the most tragic incidents involved Ashlee Reeves, a beloved community member. To honour her memory and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, we propose the construction of overpass walkways.

Overpass walkways provide a safe passage for pedestrians, keeping them separated from fast-moving vehicles. Not only would this reduce the risk of accidents, but it would also promote a safer environment for students, faculty, and local residents who regularly need to cross Route 7. According to the Federal Highway Administration, pedestrian overpasses can effectively reduce pedestrian crashes by 86% when properly implemented.

Naming the overpass walkway after Ashlee Reeves would serve as a fitting tribute to her life while providing a lasting impact on the safety of the community she was part of. By acting on this initiative, we are ensuring that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one due to avoidable traffic incidents.

We call on local government authorities, SUNY Cobleskill, and New York State transportation agencies to prioritize this project. Funding can be sourced through state safety improvement grants and community fundraising efforts. This project would not only save lives but also demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of our community members.

Please sign this petition to support the construction of overpass walkways on Route State 7 and to honour the memory of Ashlee Reeves with a lasting memorial. Together, we can make a difference and prevent future tragedies.
