Build more skate parks in Rio Rancho

The Issue

I love skateboarding. It's a passion that gives me joy and keeps me active. However, living in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, I've noticed a significant lack of skateparks that truly allow skateboarders to enjoy their sport to the fullest. The few skateparks we have are small and compact, making it difficult for skateboarders, especially those of us trying to practice and improve our skills, to find open and inviting spaces.

Rio Rancho is a growing city with a vibrant community of young people, many of whom are avid skateboarders. A lack of adequate facilities does not just hinder our ability to skateboard safely and effectively; it also discourages participation in the sport. More spacious and well-designed skateparks would encourage more residents to take up skateboarding, thereby fostering a dynamic, healthy community.

Building more skateparks can have a significant positive impact on our community. It will provide our youth with a constructive and engaging outdoor activity, reduce idle time, and even diminish juvenile delinquency rates. Urban studies have demonstrated that recreational spaces can enhance community well-being and social engagement.

It’s time we took the initiative to request our local government to invest in the construction of additional skateparks. By doing so, not only will we be providing our youth with more options for recreational activity, but we will also be investing in the physical health, social engagement, and overall quality of life of Rio Rancho residents.

We call on the City Council of Rio Rancho and local community leaders to prioritize this issue. Let’s work together to make Rio Rancho a city that supports its residents' passions and contributes to a healthier, more active community.
