Thanks to you, over 1,000 people have signed the petition calling for Beacon to build safe bike infrastructure and adopt a Bicycle Master Plan! And now it’s time to show up and make our voices heard.

We’ll be presenting the petition to the Beacon City Council on Monday, October 20 at 7pm. Whether or not you plan to speak, your presence matters! Wear RED and/or bring your bike helmet to show support for safer streets for kids, families, and everyone who walks or bikes in Beacon.

Why We Must Act Now

One of the reasons we need a long-term Bicycle Master Plan can be seen at Fishkill Avenue near Wilkes, a key crossing for Middle and High School students.

The recent redesign removed the shoulder, once a buffer for cyclists and pedestrians, and added a turn lane, encouraging higher speeds.

A bike lane will soon be added to Beekman St, but it will abruptly end at 9D. We don’t need more poorly-designed, car-centric streets in Beacon—let’s incorporate a Bicycle Master Plan as part of the city’s upcoming Comprehensive Plan. (of note: A recommendation to undertake a “bicycle connectivity plan” is included in the Fishkill Avenue Concepts Committee’s soon-to-be-released final report.)

Here’s How You Can Help

➡️ Attend the City Council Meeting on Monday, October 20:

Meet at 6:30pm, City Hall (1 Municipal Plaza). Meeting begins at 7pm. Sign up for a 3-minute public comment slot if you’d like to speak. If you need help with your comments, please reach out to us at beaconbicyclecoalition@gmail.com or on Instagram @beacon.bicycle.coalition, and we’ll walk you through the process.

Wear RED, or bring your bike helmet: A visible show of unity for bike infrastructure and safer streets for all.

Bring Signs & Friends: The mayor and city administrator have implied there isn’t public demand for alternatives to car travel. Let’s prove otherwise.

Together, we can make our city safer and more sustainable.
