As a resident of Heyden, Ontario, I have witnessed multiple animal and human fatalities every year due to the lack of proper safety along highway 17 North at the bottom of the mile hill. This issue is personal to me because it would prevent many members of my family, friends, and neighboring community of Goulais River, from being harmed.

I remember driving on the highway one day when suddenly a moose crossed right in front of my car. I was able to avoid hitting it but not everyone is as lucky. According to statistics from Ontario Road Safety Annual Reports, there were 1,055 animal-related collisions in 2019 alone. These collisions resulted in injuries and fatalities for both animals and humans.

Building an animal crossing along the highway would not only prevent these tragic accidents but also provide safe passage for wildlife that need to cross the road for food or mating purposes. Studies have shown that animal crossings reduce collisions by up to 90%.

Furthermore, this project would benefit our local economy by creating jobs during construction and promoting eco-tourism once completed.

We urge our government officials and transportation authorities to take action now before another innocent life is lost. Let's build an animal crossing along Highway 17 North in Goulais River, Ontario.
