In 2023, my children lost their father, a loss that has left a profound impact on their young lives. They don’t have a physical memorial or graveside to visit, and as a grieving parent, I’ve watched them carry the burden of their loss in a way that is both tender and heartbreaking. Our family discovered solace when we stumbled across a Wind Phone. This unique phone booth allowed my children a quiet space to speak to their father, remember cherished moments, and feel a connection that was deeply healing for them.

Knowing how much this experience meant to us, I became inspired to offer the same comforting space for other families experiencing similar grief. Oregon Ridge Nature Center, with its peaceful surroundings, seems like the perfect location for such a project. The natural beauty of the area enhances the healing atmosphere needed for a Wind Phone to have its profound effect.

Wind Phones began in Japan in 2010 as a way for those mourning losses from the tsunami to "talk" with their loved ones as a way of processing grief and finding peace. The idea is simple yet extraordinarily impactful: through the symbolic act of speaking into the phone, many find their emotions soothed, enabling them to express unspoken thoughts and feelings.

I believe that installing a Wind Phone at Oregon Ridge Nature Center would give people a designated station to work through their grief in a sanctuary-like setting. Many visitors to the park are already seeking solace and healing in nature, and the presence of a Wind Phone would add to this therapeutic environment.

Moreover, creating this space would not only cater to local visitors but could also become a cherished location for travelers from neighboring areas, perhaps offering workshops or guided sessions on processing grief. Community involvement in building this Wind Phone can foster a greater sense of togetherness, bringing people together to support one another in loss.

Please support this initiative by lending your signature. Establishing a Wind Phone at the Oregon Ridge Nature Center will create a touching memorial space for many and honor our collective need to connect in loss.
