As a resident of the Sacramento area, I have personally witnessed firsthand the tragedy that unfolds daily along the stretch of Interstate 80 between Davis and Sacramento. Particularly the crossing over the Yolo Bypass. This highway serves as a critical corridor connecting not just towns and cities, but also habitats for countless animals. Unfortunately, this means that many of these creatures' lives are cut short by passing traffic, resulting in devastating roadkill incidents that occur with alarming frequency.

Every other time I travel on this highway, I see lifeless bodies of deer, squirrels, raccoons, birds, and smaller mammals on or at the roadside, there are even times there have been bob cats and bears hit and left to suffer for no other reason than trying to cross a road that is intruding on their own habitat. These heartbreaking scenes are not just a personal distress but a significant environmental concern. This high rate of wildlife fatalities indicates a compelling need for immediate action. Research shows that wildlife crossings or green bridges drastically reduce roadkill by providing safe passageways for animals, which in turn helps preserve native wildlife populations and biodiversity.

The concept isn't new, successful examples in places like Banff National Park in Canada and recent initiatives in Southern California have proven their worth. These structures provide critters a safe passageway, and such an overpass would significantly reduce the harmful impact of our roadways on wildlife. By implementing a green bridge over Interstate 80, particularly in the Yolo Bypass area, we can create a safe, sustainable path for our wildlife. This could also enhance road safety for drivers, reducing the risk of collisions.

The Federal Highway Administration has acknowledged the effectiveness of wildlife crossings, and there are grant funds available that we can tap into for this initiative. This is not just about preserving animals' lives, it's about caring for our ecosystems and ensuring a coexistence between humans and wildlife as intended by nature.

I urge the California Department of Transportation and other relevant authorities to prioritize the construction of a wildlife overpass above this stretch of the highway. Let’s safeguard our diverse native species, improve our community's safety, and set a precedent for environmental protection.
