The Issue

In the fall of 2024, the Lakes Region of New Hampshire experienced a heartbreaking event when a devastating fire destroyed our beloved community pool. This pool wasn't just a place for leisure; it was a cornerstone of our community, fostering camaraderie, physical fitness, and providing a safe place for our youth. The loss has left a profound impact on our athletes, children, and the community's health and well-being.

Sports teams and swimming clubs in our region have suffered greatly. Our young athletes no longer have a local venue to practice and hone their skills, leading to an increased strain on families who must now travel considerable distances to access facilities. Moreover, swimming is a crucial life skill, and our children are losing the opportunity to learn it in a safe and supportive environment.

The construction of a new swimming pool would rejuvenate our community, offering a myriad of benefits. It would encourage physical activity among all age groups, serve as a gathering point for social interactions and community events, and could even become a venue for local and regional competitions, boosting our local economy.

Financially, a pool can be a viable investment. According to industry data, community pools can generate significant revenue through memberships, swimming lessons, and special events. Moreover, with grants and public-private partnerships, the initial construction costs can be substantially offset.

We must act now to restore this vital resource to our community. We call upon local government officials, community leaders, and potential investors to join forces in creating a plan to build a new swimming pool in the Lakes Region. By doing so, we can secure a healthier, more vibrant future for all residents.

Sign this petition to support the construction of a new swimming pool in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and help bring life back to our community.

“I am aware of this, and I think a community center with a year-round pool would be good for Laconia. With any proposal like this, one has to consider all aspects of the project and its impact on all residents. Having lived here most of my life, and having been a fitness instructor at the YMCA, I witnessed the financial stress that an Olympic-size pool can place on a nonprofit, ultimately resulting in the demise of the Y here in Laconia. A well thought out proposal with a fiscal impact for the community needs to include a business plan with a self-sustaining aspect. Without that, I fear that we will have pushback from taxpayers.”
