Skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a thriving subculture that fosters creativity, resilience, and an active lifestyle among youth and adults alike. Yet, in Biloxi, Mississippi, skaters lack a dedicated, safe space to practice and hone their skills. By constructing a concrete skatepark underneath the I-110 bridge, we have an incredible opportunity to provide a premier facility that would not only serve local skaters but also draw enthusiasts from neighboring areas. 

The space beneath the I-110 bridge has been underutilized for years. Transforming it into a skatepark is a smart investment that maximizes existing space, protects skaters from inclement weather, and adds a vibrant community hub to our city. 

Skateparks have been shown to reduce juvenile crime rates, increase physical activity among youth, and foster community engagement. For instance, the Tony Hawk Foundation points out that accessible, local skateparks decrease childhood obesity by encouraging more kids to engage in physical activities regularly.



A dedicated skatepark would be an asset to Biloxi, serving as a space for community events, competitions, and skateboarding clinics. It would also boost local businesses, drawing visitors who will patronize restaurants and shops in the vicinity. According to the Public Skatepark Development Guide, well-planned skateparks can generate significant economic benefits for their communities. 

Additionally, its location under the bridge offers unique architectural possibilities, providing a unique and aesthetically pleasing landmark.

We need city planners, local businesses, and community leaders to unite in support of this cause. By working together, we can secure funding, navigate regulatory requirements, and bring this vision to life. The success of other cities in implementing strategic public spaces demonstrates that change is possible and incredibly beneficial.
