Build a skatepark or pump track in Gibraltar

Build a skatepark or pump track in Gibraltar
The Issue
Living in Gibraltar, I've faced firsthand the challenges posed by cyclists zipping through pedestrian areas. On several occasions, I've narrowly avoided collisions with them, and I believe this is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. Our tiny but vibrant community is filled with enthusiastic kids who just want to ride their bikes and scooters. However, Gibraltar's limited space means they often have to weave through areas that should be safe for pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists alike.
One effective solution is to build a dedicated skatepark or pump track. Not only would this create a designated and safe area for riding, but it would also encourage kids and adults to be more active and enjoy outdoor activities in a healthier, safer environment. Contrary to the belief that Gibraltar is too small for such a development, there are several underutilized areas that could be repurposed for this project without impacting the existing infrastructure.
Globally, many cities have embraced the positive impact skateparks and pump tracks offer. For instance, research from the Tony Hawk Foundation shows that skateparks reduce crime and promote tourism while increasing overall community well-being as they attract people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in an invigorating physical activity. Moreover, these sites often become hubs of social interaction and community building.
By building a skatepark or pump track in Gibraltar, we aren't just creating a space for cyclists and skaters; we're shaping a safer and more cohesive community. We need to ensure that the tiny stretches of public space we have are used wisely, balancing the needs of all community members.
Let's call on Gibraltar's urban planners and local government to give this idea the attention it deserves. Not only will it make our streets safer, but it will also bring our community closer together. Join me in advocating for a skatepark or pump track to safeguard our pedestrians and invigorate community spirit.
Please sign this petition to urge our local authorities to consider this vital addition to Gibraltar’s urban landscape. Together, we can make our community safer and more vibrant for everyone.
