The Issue
Growing up in Kissimmee, I've witnessed first-hand the immense talent among our local skaters and athletes. Yet, they lack the crucial infrastructure that can hone their skills and nurture their passions. A skatepark near our downtown area will provide just that.
Currently, those wishing to skate in a proper park have to venture far from downtown Kissimmee. This places an undue burden on our youth, many of whom do not have the means to travel far distances just to engage in a sport they love. By situating a skatepark within Lakefront Park or the Oak Street Park Sports Complex, we ensure accessibility for everyone, regardless of transportation means.
Kissimmee has always had the potential to showcase its vibrant sporting culture. But without the right facilities, that potential remains untapped. Skateboarding is not just a sport; it's an art and a form of expression for many young people. A local skatepark would offer a safe and designated environment for skaters to practice, make friends, and learn in a community setting, enriching the lives of our younger residents.
Additionally, a skatepark is a community investment. It can decrease vandalism and provide a healthy outlet for energies. It can foster a sense of community pride and act as a gathering place that benefits the entire area. With the growing popularity of skateboarding, coinciding with its inclusion in the Olympics, it's an ideal time for Kissimmee to embrace this movement.
I urge city officials and decision-makers to consider this proposal seriously. Let’s give our youth the opportunity to shine in a safe and supportive environment while enriching our community with a new, vibrant space. Please sign this petition and make a difference for Kissimmee's future skaters.
