Most youth have access to a place of their preferred hobby or sport. Baseball kids have baseball fields, soccer kids have soccer fields, basketball kids have basketball courts, but what do the skaters have? Shouldn’t skaters have a skatepark? Well, skaters do have a skatepark; the skaters in the other cities that is. The nearest skatepark is located 2 towns over and for the youth of Sylmar, it’s an inconvenience to have to travel there. The people of Sylmar NEED a skatepark. By people I don’t just mean the youth, I mean anyone who wants to pick up a board, whether you’ve been skating since the 80s or just went to the store and bought a board, everyone needs a place to skate. Without a skatepark to be at the skaters of Sylmar are left having to skate out on public property, which isn’t designed for these activities. Skaters can hurt themselves if they skate in an area not designed for skating. Having a skatepark would reduce the strain of skaters skating in areas they aren’t welcome such as inside schools. Every skater knows the pain of rolling over a crack in the sidewalk and being sent flying forwards onto the pavement, all because the ground is bad. The area in which the skatepark would be located is inhabited by vandalized park benches, something the park already has a few dozen feet a way. It’s underutilized space that can be utilized to benefit the skaters of Sylmar. The longer we wait for nothing, the longer it takes for the people to have a place to skate.
