The Issue

Every day, at least a hundred children navigate their way to and from school along Roxanna, a route that is doomed to have something bad happen on it due to the lack of sidewalks. Without a safe pedestrian path, these children are forced to walk on the road itself—a roadway shared with numerous student drivers heading to the same school. I constantly witness near-misses, with children almost being struck by cars. It's unsettling to think about how one tragic incident could forever change this community. Student drivers are infamously not the safest, some speeding down this street and not paying attention to where they’re going. These conditions make it far too likely for the unthinkable to happen one day.

Across many communities, ensuring pedestrian safety has reduced accidents significantly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities make up 17% of total traffic fatalities. Preventing such tragedies begins with creating safe spaces for pedestrians on their daily routes.

Currently, Roxanna lacks the basic infrastructure to support the volume of foot traffic, especially during peak school hours. With a simple yet impactful addition of sidewalks, the risk of accidents could be drastically reduced. Installing sidewalks would not only protect lives but also promote healthier lifestyles and environmental benefits by encouraging walking as a safe mode of transport.

We call on the local government, the city planning commission, and community leaders to prioritize the construction of a sidewalk on Roxanna. This project is more than just a safety improvement; it's an investment in the future of our children and the prosperity of our community.
