Build a Safe Sidewalk Connecting the Wright’s Point Light to the Spanish Moss Trail

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Beaufort and Port Royal, respectfully request that the Town of Port Royal, the City of Beaufort, Beaufort County and SCDOT prioritize a continuous, ADA-accessible sidewalk connection from the Wright’s Point Lane/Midtown Drive light on Parris Island Gateway to Lenora Drive/Spanish Moss Trail via the Russell Bell Bridge. This project would improve pedestrian safety, expand access to recreation, and strengthen connectivity between neighborhoods. The Mayor of Port Royal Kevin Philips has noted that documentation of community support would help advance this request with SCDOT. By signing this petition, we show that this project is a priority for our community.

“I sincerely thank the residents who have taken the time to advocate for a safer, more accessible pedestrian connection between Wright’s Point and the Spanish Moss Trail. The City of Beaufort supports efforts to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity throughout our community and the greater Beaufort area. In fact, the Beaufort County Connects Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan specifically identifies the Russell Bell Bridge corridor as an important connection to the Spanish Moss Trail. While this particular route falls outside the City’s direct jurisdiction, we support working collaboratively with Beaufort County, the Town of Port Royal, SCDOT, and our community to identify opportunities to advance this important connection. Improving safe, ADA-accessible connections between our neighborhoods and resources like the Spanish Moss Trail benefits our entire community, and I appreciate the residents who have brought continued attention and support to this need.
