The Issue

When I first stepped onto the grounds of Willis High School as a freshman, I quickly realized how crowded and bustling it has become. With each passing year, our school population grows, and the hallways feel more cramped. As a current freshman, I believe a freshman campus isn't the solution to our increasing numbers or space issues; it feels more like a way of cushioning us rather than addressing the real problem.

Willis, Texas, is experiencing growth and expansion, and it's pivotal that our educational infrastructure keeps pace. Splitting students into separate campuses might superficially alleviate some immediate concerns, but it's a short-term fix. What we truly need is a new facility – a new high school that can house students comfortably and provide modern resources to all grade levels.

Recent studies show that high schools with growing populations often face challenges related to overcrowding, which can diminish the quality of education students receive. In schools where the number of students surpasses the optimal capacity, there's often a noticeable impact on student performance, stress levels, and the overall school experience. Building a new high school could significantly mitigate these issues, promoting a better learning environment for everyone.

Additionally, centralizing students in one high school allows for better resource allocation, from faculty to extracurricular activities. Teachers won't be stretched thin across different campuses, and students can enjoy a broader range of programs and opportunities.

The fiscal responsibility of constructing a new school might seem daunting at first glance, but investing in education is investing in the future. Large school districts have found success in bond referendums for such projects, proving community support is achievable when the benefits are evident.

Let's come together as a community and advocate for a new high school in Willis. By doing so, we’re not just reacting to immediate needs, but proactively planning for a sustainable educational future for all current and upcoming students.

Please join me in signing this petition to call on our local decision-makers to prioritize the construction of a new high school over a freshman campus. Let's protect and nurture the educational environment for students today and tomorrow.
