The Issue
Having grown up in Rochester and Chatham, one of the things that sticks out to me the most is the gentle cooing of doves and pigeons. These birds, often misunderstood, have been a constant part of our local ecosystem. Yet, they face increasing struggles to survive due to urbanisation and lack of suitable habitats. I strongly believe that we owe a lot to these beautiful creatures; they are not pests or vermin, but rather a significant part of our natural diversity.
Currently, the pigeon and dove population in Rochester and Chatham is on a decline, and these birds find it increasingly hard to find safe spaces to nest and thrive. Without intervention, this decline could lead to their disappearance from our area, creating an imbalance in local biodiversity and robbing future generations of their gentle presence.
One viable solution is the construction of a dove and pigeon cote — a simple, yet effective structure that provides a safe refuge for these birds. Placing these cotes strategically in open spaces or parks within Rochester and Chatham, like the Rochester Castle Gardens, would support the existing bird population and encourage their numbers to grow.
Cotes not only help support the birds but also provide educational opportunities for the community, teaching the next generation the importance of coexistence with our wildlife. Cities such as London have successfully integrated pigeon cotes, demonstrating that they can be both a practical and aesthetically pleasing addition to urban environments.
Let's work together to preserve the natural beauty of our towns and ensure that doves and pigeons continue to grace our skies. Please sign this petition to support the building of a dove and pigeon cote in Rochester and Chatham. Your support will help protect these birds and maintain the rich biodiversity of our area for years to come.
