Build a Dog Run at Cambridge greenway or near Pek Kio
The Issue
Every morning and evening, I bring my beloved dog to the local park near Cambridge Road and Pek Kio, a place that has become a lively hub for dog owners in our community. It’s where wagging tails meet, and bonds are formed not just between the dogs, but between the humans who love them. Unfortunately, despite this being such a vibrant social scene for pet owners, there isn’t a designated area where our dogs can run freely and safely without infringing on the activities of others in the park.
A dedicated dog run would be an enormous asset to our community, offering a safe, enclosed space where dogs can play and exercise off-leash. Beyond physical fitness, such a space would enhance the wellbeing of our dogs through social interaction, which is crucial for developing good, calm behavior in them. Evidence shows that socializing dogs in controlled environments reduces aggressive tendencies, minimizes anxiety, and enhances their adaptability to new situations and people.
Currently, residents have to travel long distances to find suitable dog runs, an inconvenience that could be addressed by establishing one locally, near Cambridge Road and Pek Kio. Singapore is home to approximately 62,000 registered pet dogs—an indication of the demand for accessible, dedicated spaces for pets.
Beyond the benefits for dog owners and their pets, a dog run would also contribute to the wider community. The presence of regular, responsible dog owners can deter vandalism and enhance the sense of community security. Furthermore, a well-designed dog run could integrate aesthetically pleasing landscaping, providing an enhanced environment for all park users.
To make this dream a reality, we need to reach out to local authorities and express our collective support for the project. We propose working together with the City Development Department and local animal welfare groups to select an appropriate site and design for the dog run. We seek approval from city planners and funding allocations to support the development and maintenance of the space.
Please join us in calling on local officials to consider this much-needed addition to our neighborhood. Sign this petition to express your support for a safe and joyful space where our dogs can thrive. Together, we can make our community a better place for all pet lovers.
