The Issue

As a resident of South Bay who enjoys taking daily walks, I find myself constantly worried about my safety due to the lack of a continuous sidewalk from the bottom of Gault Road all the way to the old Co-Op towards Grand Bay. The roads are filled with blind spots and sharp turns, creating a dangerous environment for pedestrians.

Every time I step out for a walk, I am reminded of how risky it is to navigate these roads. Navigating through this neighborhood without a proper sidewalk is not just inconvenient, but potentially life-threatening. The absence of sidewalks makes it difficult to maintain a safe distance from traffic, especially during peak hours when the roads are bustling with vehicles.

A continuous sidewalk would not only provide safety for pedestrians but also encourage more residents to enjoy the benefits of walking. According to the CDC, walking can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes, and improve overall mental health. Sadly, the current conditions deter many from reaping these benefits. This would also be an huge benefit to local residents of the community once Bay Street Market opens, as this would provide a safe way on foot to shop local for groceries.

We deserve safe pathways, a pedestrian-friendly community is a vibrant, growing community.

Installing a continuous sidewalk here could also enhance property values and contribute to a reduction in traffic congestion, as more people might choose to walk instead of drive for short trips. Examples from other regions have shown that neighborhoods with well-maintained sidewalks see lower instances of pedestrian accidents and have residents who are generally more active.

I urge the local government of Saint John to prioritize the construction of this continuous sidewalk. We need to make our roads safer for all members of the community, from children going to school to the elderly enjoying a stroll.
