Demand Curriculum About Sexual Assault and Consent in Illinois Schools
The Issue
Many people around the world have problems with sexual assault and sexual harassment in their daily lives, whether we know it or not. It could be walking in halls at school, and/or walking to/from school, games, and so much more. I want to bring more attention to school districts and communities as a whole, and how they plan to take action, solve the problem, and educate on how to prevent it and keep people safe in schools.
We need to educate more about what consent, sexual assault, and sexual harassment are and face the problems head on. It could be through an assembly, a speaker, a class hour, or even just information sheets. We also need safe places to talk about their experiences. This is a deep subject, but it needs to be talked about and taught how to be prevented.
Personally, I have been sexually harassed and assaulted at school, I said something the first time, but it went unnoticed yet it continued to happen. I was meet with my breaking point when it continuously happened in the hall. I yelled at the them in the hall in front of everyone, instead of being quiet for so long. I told my teacher about it, but their was nothing we could do because I didn't know them and couldn't see their face. It happened right before that class hour again and I told her everything in the hall, she sent me to the councilors office, and they tried sending me back upstairs. She meet with me outside the classroom that same day yet again, and led me to the office, I had to watch it on a video camera happening to me again as I explained what happened and what was said, it is a different feeling when you see it happen from a different perspective. You might second guess or think you are over reacting, but you are not. If someone touches you or violates you, you have every right to speak up about it and try to get something done. I want people to be able to feel safer at schools all around. It is worth sharing my story if it helps others find their voice and share theirs too. She helped me find my confidence to get something done about the problem.
I just want people to be educated about sexual assault, sexual harassment, and consent. Many people have Trauma from an experience from Sexual assault. I want to bring awareness and help other people feel safe.
