Petition Closed

We demand a MAXIMUM sentence for this brutal crime which was committed against a defenceless animal. We believe that Animal Welfare laws of Greece must be taken SERIOUSLY.

We ask that you please pass this on to everyone you know in order to emphasize our concern with regard to both this, and other animal brutality cases brought before the Greek justice system.

In Crete, indeed throughout Greece, animal groups deal with a great number of animal related issues. There are ever increasing number of young litters of kittens and puppies tied alive inside polythene bags and discarded like rubbish into wayside bins. Countless numbers of dogs are deprived of any human companionship, neglected and chained in isolation throughout Greece. Young and old dogs callously abandoned onto the streets and as in this case, very disturbing issues of horrific animal cruelty and abuse.

This petition has been raised in order to impress upon those responsible for administering the justice system in Greece the urgent need to treat animal cruelty and abuse cases with the importance which these warrant. In too many instances when finally successful in bringing a case to prosecution the result is often merely a slap on the wrist.

The following account underlines our experiences with regard to the very worrying indifference of some officials.

This case involves a so-called shepherd who had systematically neglected his dogs to the point where a concerned animal worker was trying to support them herself. She found his dog who had been left severely injured and suffering immense pain,  still bleeding when she went to attend to it. She rushed the animal to the nearest vet. Sadly, the dog was too badly injured to save – apart from being battered about its head..... horrifically, both of its eyes had been prised out !!!!

The so-called shepherd was arrested on NOVEMBER 5th 2010 he appeared at a hearing and claimed that the dog had eaten a chicken – his brutal attack - was punishment .....Astoundingly the public prosecutor accepted this – she, it seems , found this acceptable !!!

The so- called shepherd learned NOTHING – arrogantly  and victorious he immediately chained a newly acquired puppy in the same place where previously he had battered and brutalized his neglected dog.

Following huge complaints and protest we were successful in taking this case forward. However, on successive occasions and for various reasons, all previous hearings have been postponed .

The final court hearing is due to take place on 15th October 2012 - 23 months on from when first reported.

Please sign this petition – we call for the MAXIMUM sentence possible for this brutal act committed against a defenceless animal.  We ask that the justice system recognises and acts accordingly with regard to all animal abuse and brutality crimes. We believe that it is essential to send the strongest message possible that cruelty, abuse and abandonment of animals is illegal and that the full strength of Greece ‘s Animal Welfare Laws will be used to impose sentences which serve to reflect the true severity of these despicable crimes
