A gay-straight alliance club (GSA) is a club that would provide support, acceptance, and a safe place for students at this school, especially members of the LGBTQ+ community. In a news report, Principal McGrew claimed “It’s not a subject to even discuss, because [we] don’t have one. That’s all I’ll say about it.” speaking about a GSA club. This came from the Charleston Gazette. In this article, it was also mentioned there weren’t any teachers willing to sponsor the club. In the same article, Jennifer Meinig, executive director of the state’s chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, brought up the legality of the situation. The Equal Access Act (1980’s) requires public schools to treat all extracurricular clubs fairly. This club is not being treated fairly, and it should be approved.
