Tell the Renaissance Hotel: the Brown University community does not tolerate abuse or exploitation

As Brown University prepares to celebrate the past 250 years of education and community, alumni and other member’s of Brown’s close community are returning to Providence and staying in hotels in Providence.
One hotel in Providence starkly contrasts the ideals held by Brown University: the Renaissance Hotel, owned and managed by the Procaccianti Group, has had numerous grievances filed against it by workers. The Hotel has disregarded workers' safety, emotionally abused workers, used intimidation and interrogation tactics to deter the formation of unions, and has over-worked employees for sub-living wages. Workers have been required to use dangerous chemicals with no training, leading to OSHA intervention and thousands of dollars in fines. The hotel management fired a union activist during her maternity leave, and only reinstated her after she went to the Department of Labor. Workers have called for a boycott of the abusive hotel.
As the official Brown website states, “The mission of Brown University is to serve the community, the nation, and the world.” The community, Providence residents and workers, is in need of such service from the university. The city we call home has been marred by the abuse of its residents by the Renaissance Hotel and the Procaccianti Group. It is time for Brown University to show that we, as members of the Providence community, will not stand for the violation of our neighbor’s rights.
We, the Student Labor Alliance of Brown University and other concerned students, ask you to sign this petition to show your support of the boycott of the Renaissance Hotel and ask that Brown University make a public statement condemning the Procaccianti Group’s practices as well. During this time of gathering to celebrate our university’s ideals of respect and service, we ask the University to pledge to uphold the boycott of the hotel and refuse to support the abuse of Providence community members.
As parents, alumni, students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Brown University community, we pledge to respect and uphold the boycott of the Renaissance Hotel and request that Brown University make a public statement to show our commitment to Providence and our community.
