Dear all,
We have garnered over 1200 signatures on this petition demanding that Brown University live up to its commitments! But we need your help taking further action: Jeremiah, Karina, and Clew are still being forced out of their programs.
We learned today that Jeremiah was informed that he will have to leave the country in 14 days. After being severely underpaid or not paid at all for months of work over the summer, Jeremiah stopped working in August. This amounts to thousands of dollars in stolen wages.
To make matters worse, without his pay, Jeremiah was unable to pay tuition and was charged exorbitant interest rates per Brown’s policy. Brown needs to pay Jeremiah equal pay for the equal work that he has done as a Masters grad!
Now, we need to step up our campaign and meet outrage with action.
Experience shows that Brown cares about its reputation, apparently more than it cares about graduate student-workers. We need to make it impossible for Brown to ignore this. Use the Action Kit on GLO’s website and help us fight for our colleagues to stay:
1. Share the petition on social media, explain why you support and tag @GradLaborOrg on your post
2. Call Graduate School Interim Dean Tal Lewis at 1-401-863-3571 and let him know you support Clew, Karina and Jeremiah
3. E-mail the Graduate School, the School of Public Health and the Brown/Trinity program:
- Tal Lewis, Interim Dean of the Graduate School thomas_lewis@brown.edu
- Angela Brazil, Director of the Brown/Trinity MFA Program angela_brazil@brown.edu
- Megan Ranney, Academic Dean, School of Public Health megan_ranney@brown.edu
4. Donate and share Jeremiah’s GoFundMe to cover his unpaid tuition

Since our petition went public, Brown administrators have informed GLO that they are “working on” getting Jeremiah paid for weeks of unpaid labor. We need to keep the pressure on so that we ensure Jeremiah is paid fairly for the work he has done. And Brown must also remedy his student status so that he can keep his visa.
As Brown continues to tout its diverse acceptance rates of grads of color, internationals, and grads from underrepresented backgrounds, it is in the same moment in the process of pushing these three grads out of their programs, whom upon their arrival, comprised those same statistics Brown loves to boast about. Support cannot end at admissions.
We need your help to win this fight. If you’re on campus, contact organizing@glounion.org to help us fight for our colleagues to stay.
In solidarity,
Sherena Razek, GLO President
