Margaret Beardsley started this petition to Brown University Athletics Department and

This is the official petition to retain Brown Women's Skiing's Varsity status. On May 28th, Brown University announced that it would cut 11 well-performing Varsity teams with no warning and no clear decision-making metric, as part of the "Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative."

This season alone, Brown Women's Skiing placed 3rd at Nationals in the Slalom, and two athletes earned All-American honors. Three athletes collected Scholar All-American accolades. Brown Women's Skiing athletes earned collegiate wins, the all-division sportsmanship award, and three All-MacConnell Division Team placements for top-15 performance in our division. We also won an NCAA APR Public Recognition Award, for having academic achievement in the top 10% of our sport.

The Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative cited a lack of nearby training venues as an inhibitor to any potential success. This challenge is intrinsic to the sport of skiing. It is very common for competitive Division I ski teams to drive upwards of an hour to reach their training venues, even when located in rural areas such as Maine. This is a sacrifice that we as members of the Brown Skiing Team have made eagerly, and will continue to make to satisfy our love for our sport.

Our teammates have worked in immeasurable ways to achieve their dream of skiing at Brown. We are a diverse team from a wide array of educational backgrounds, and we have worked hard to gain entry to this team—sometimes turning down other Division 1 offers. We chose Brown. Help us protect our dream that was so effortlessly, senselessly, and inexplicably taken away.

Brown Skiing’s Varsity status grants us use of strength training facilities, a strength training coach, access to physical therapy, tuning and equipment rooms, ski coaching and funding. Not only are these resources critical to our success, they are necessary for ensuring our safety. Ski racing is a dangerous sport, and the ability to strength train effectively, access physical therapy, and maintain our equipment is vital for preventing injury.

Signed by current and prospective athletes, alumni, friends, and supporters of Brown Women’s Skiing. Thank you for your help!
