Show The Free Portrait Project: Crown Heights Final Exhibition
The Issue
To the Exhibitions Committee of the Brooklyn Museum,
We ask that you host the final exhibition of The Free Portrait Project: Crown Heights 200 portraits in late Summer of 2016. These 200 paintings record who we are now amid shifting demographics and upend a tradition of portraiture for a wealthy few by giving these paintings to people from all walks of life. This community-driven work embodies your mission to welcome our rich heritage and bridge the dynamic cultures of this neighborhood for each of your visitors.
Join BP Eric Adams, Danny Simmons, Senator Hamilton, CM’s Cumbo and Cornegy, Assemblymembers Mosley and Richardson, Commissioner Karim Camara, the Lubavitch Community, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Brooklyn Historical Society, Crown Heights North Association, Crow Hill Community Association, Crown Heights Mediation Center, local merchants, congregations, and neighbors. We all want to see our community represented on the museum walls.
This exhibition will make our museum inclusive and accessible to the entire community. That all those whose portraits are painted can gather with their families to see themselves on your hallowed walls, to meet their neighbors in this new light, will be a truly remarkable & unprecedented interaction between art and the public.
Thank you.
