The community and the Brookhaven Alliance for Homeowners' Rights (BAHR) has come together to fight the unfair law under consideration by the town of Brookhaven that makes it illegal for residents to rent their homes to guests, with 15 days of jail time for initial infractions!

We Are Organizing:

Come to an upcoming Zoom event (Monday @ 7:30) to find out how YOU can help and what we are doing to fight this law. Zoom link

Key details about BAHR:

Monday meeting agenda:

  • What this law allows and disallows. What are the penalties (fines and jail time) for violations?
  • How can you help. Who can you reach out to? When and where should you show up?
  • Seek out volunteers for specific roles.
  • Key messages and talking points for the public meeting on May 4
  • Irwin Izen, ESQ will discuss the legal avenues and options we have going forward.
  • Answer audience questions.

The most important thing you can do is attend the public meeting, May 4 @ 5:30 in Farmingville!

This meeting is our chance to speak directly to the elected representatives who have proposed this rule and let them know that their constituents do not support the rule.

In-person attendees will be given the chance to speak, on a first-come, first-served basis and we encourage you to take the opportunity to outline your opposition to the rule.

The event will be live-streamed, but it is much more powerful if you are able to make it in person. No comments will be accepted from virtual attendees.

More to Come:

This campaign is just beginning, and we need everyone’s support to block this rule. The representatives have underestimated the impact this rule will have on our community and our local economy.

By the numbers:

At least 640 residents of Brookhaven are using their properties to help pay their bills and that this is driving significant economic return for local shops and businesses in the area.

In 2022, rental revenue on Airbnb and VRBO was more than $22 million and guests spent 62,000 nights in Brookhaven.  That is a lot of trips downtown, restaurant visits, grocery trips and tanks of gas, supporting our communities' businesses.

We need your help:

If you would like to take a leadership role or volunteer in any capacity, please message us! We know there's a lot of passion out there, and we need your help.

Today we especially need people with strong and positive stories about their STR to speak at Tuesday's meeting.

Sincerely,

the BAHR team
