On May 6th, 2021 Abdessamad Essafoui was a victim of a fatal shooting after a dispute on Cruger Avenue in the Bronx. He has been a member of the community for over 20 years. His life was taken in the same community in which he’s grown up in, attended school in, made friends in, worked in, and touched many souls in. This circumstance makes the tragedy that much more devastating. He was loved by many in the community. This loss has impacted the community as a whole immensely. The current state of our nation due to the ongoing issue of horrific gun violence is devastating and needs advancements towards resolution. It is affecting our communities —  the ones in which we are raised in, our families reside in, and it should not be permissible that it could be the same community that their lives could potentiallyend in. Awareness needs to be made, systemic change needs to be made, and justice needs to be served. Commemorating the life of Abdessamad Essafoui by co-naming Cruger Avenue brings a light to the community that is needed due to the association with the tragedy that has taken place in our neighborhood.
