Make Death Note a Broadway Musical

The Issue

Death Note premiered to TV viewers on October 3, 2006, and ran for one season. Despite having a short run, Death Note has made a huge impact on its viewers even today. Many believe that Death Note is the greatest anime of all time. CBR.com called the anime an “overwhelming success story” and continues by claiming, “it’s story, world, and characters were so fresh and unique that the whole concept seemed like lightning in a bottle”. Another source says that Death Note is a “masterpiece to a person who does not typically watch anime” (thereviewmonster.blog).

In April 2014, the musical received a New York workshop in anticipation of the Tokyo release. However, the first taste fans received of the musical was the New York demo, recorded in English and released in December 2014. Although an English demo was created first, there has never been an English production of Death Note.

The musical was a success everywhere it was performed. The production was one of the most highly anticipated musicals of 2015 in Japan and Korea. The musical was expected to tour once more in January 2020 in Tokyo, however with the current state of our world this obviously will not happen.

To summarize, Death Note is a manga and anime beloved by many Americans. The musical has been gaining a growing fan base online as well. I definitely do not expect an American production to be in the works anytime soon because of the pandemic. However, I believe a Death Note Broadway production would be a huge success in the future. Many Death Note fans would love to be on board with this project, and hopefully it will come to life one day.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this. Please share this petition with your friends who enjoy anime or live theatre so that maybe someday we will have an American production of Death Note.
