Reform the Supreme Student Governments and Strengthen Student Participation in the Education Sector Policies

The Issue

The Supreme Student Governments has been institutionalized by DepEd in 2005 by releasing the DepEd Order 43, s. 2005 through the Standard Constitution and By-Laws and revised again in 2009 thorugh DepEd Order 79, s. 2009. Now that the Center for Students and Co-curricular Affairs which took charge of the Student Govenrment Program is nowhere to be find, since 2012, the Supreme Student Govenrments had been in jeopardy. In the implementation of the Constitution and By-Laws since 2005, no school has been apprehended in the inconsistencies of its implementation, and some students would say that SSG is just a mere puppet of some faculty of schools. What's worse is during SSG elections, some faculty and staff would interfere on the affairs, some would blantantly support some of the candidates, and causes disparity among rival candidates, thus student representation in some cases became a mere joke.

This year, together with some SSG alumni, we have formulated a proposed Consitution and By-Laws to strengthed the Supreme Student Governments, once finalized, it would be submitted to your good office. We are appealing to your good office the re-establishment of National, Regional and Division Federations of Supreme Student Governments, adopt immediate actions regarding student particpation on formulating policies of the Deparment of Education affecting the students, and review and consider the proposed Constitution and By-Laws to submitted by us once finalized in order to strengthen student participation in the formulation of policies of Department of Education affecting students.

We firmly believe that student participation in the formulation of policies of the DepEd can contribute for a better education sector, not only in achieving EFA 2015 but also help cater the needs of the students, protecting the rights and welfare of the students and help improve the education sector. It's time to give the students, the voice in the Department of Education. Now, it is time to #ReformSSGNow!
