Better Internet in New Build Homes

The Issue

Just moved into your new build dream home?  Just realised that your broadband is not what you were expecting?  Realised that you could be waiting for up to 2 years after the site has been completed before Virgin or Openreach will look at putting fibre into you area?

Cable.co.uk published an article (Click here) back in Jan 2016 which discussed who is responsible for installation of Fibre into a new build estate.  According to the Builder they are not responsible, however the local council cannot authorise BT or Virgin to dig up the roads until the Builder has finished the build.

In the article by Cable.co.uk

"claims by Labour’s shadow digital minister that the lack of broadband in new-build homes is “symptomatic of the government’s indifference” on the issue.

Chi Onwurah said: “New-build is a huge opportunity to get it right. And to get it right with fibre.

“The incremental cost of laying fibre when you’re putting gas or electricity ducts in the ground is insignificant in comparison to digging up streets, so it’s a huge opportunity.”"

It is cruicle that the Builder takes responsibility, with the help of BT Openreach, to ensure cable flows from the Exchange to the door step.  Having known this at the point I was buying I would have happy contributed an extra amount to ensure that fibre was installed

Please sign this petition to force the Builders to take responsibility and allow BT/Virgin to do the work they need to do before the roads are laid on all new build properties.

Part of this petition is to ensure that all houses built within the last 5/10 years are also brought up to speed with contributions from both the Builder and BT/Virgin
