The thousands of gay and bisexual men who were convicted of “gross indecency” and other anti-gay laws have now been posthumously pardoned. Alan Turing is the heroic English computer scientist, mathematician, and cryptanalyst, who was instrumental in ending World War II; he was also convicted of sex crimes in 1957 and only pardoned, long after his death, in 2013. This new law named for him, enacted this week, pardons approximately 50,000 more men. It is not a perfect solution, and unfortunately the 15,000 living men who were found guilty of sexual acts that are no longer illegal, must apply to the Home Office for a pardon. While the pardons will not undo the harms these men endured under unjust laws, they are a vindication, an apology, and a promise to never enact such cruel and discriminatory laws again. It is a milestone in equal rights, and much congratulations are due to the LGBT campaigners and loved ones of these men who have worked for decades to bring about this day of justice. Best, Matt Breen
