Yesterday Morning we received a e-mail from the London based Lawyer informing us that the judge who heard our appeal was "Standing down" as the case as "too complicated" for him. Alot of people will think that a new appeal is the worst thing that can happen...believe me when i say it is far from it. Since February 2016 when the appeal first went in we have been promised a quick decision on the appeal. The appeal its self took until November 2016 to complete and every day since then we have longed for the decision to release our men to be given. 1 year and 8 months the Chennai6 have spent in prison serving a sentence they should not be serving awaiting a decision from a Judge for him to turn around and declare it is "too complicated" I'd be lying if i said the news didn't hit me like a tonne of bricks at first. Yes this news is crushing. Its devastating in fact. The thought of waiting even longer for the appeal to begin let alone end is terrifying. But the thought of losing an appeal on the grounds of a incompetent judge is soul destroying. But this is definitely a turning point in our case, and one we desperately needed. This only proves the flaws in the Indian judicial process and the flaws in our case. From the day our men were arrested the lower courts said they couldn't deal with the case, it was passed to the high court who quashed the decision, only for it to be put back down to the lower court, who initially confirmed they couldn't deal with it, and for them to sentence the men to 5 years. Our men have been passed from pillar to post with no-one really knowing why they have been arrested or what to do about it. The Cheif Justice is now involved and monitoring the case and that can only be a positive. She will appoint a knowledgeable judge and ensure the case is put through the courts as quickly as possible. This all comes in light of Mark Field the Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Visit to Chennai and to the men in prison. Our campaign has relied heavily on our supporters. It has relied on every single person who has signed this petition and showed how much the care. On every single letter that has been sent to any politician in every corner of Britain. Without your help we would not have had ministerial visits to the men in prison from the likes of Sir Hugo Swire, Sir Dominic Asquith and most recently Mark Field. I truly believe their visits and meetings with their Indian counterparts to explain the case and why our men were there is slowly but surely helping to resolve this nightmare. That's not to say we stop now. We are far from the finish line and the men are still far from home. We need to keep up momentum and the British Government need to work harder every single day for our men until they are home where they belong. With our parliamentary Lobby taking place on Thursday the 12th of October i urge you all to write to your MPs and ask them to attend. It is so important we have as many MPs in the room discussing this case as possible. Following the Lobby Billy's Son William and Johns Nephew Josh will be delivering the petition to Downing Street. We Invite you all along to stand at Downing street and stand with us in this fight for justice. 12 noon on Thursday the 12th of October....you can find all the details on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/chennai6 So its not all doom and gloom. I'ts hard to see at first how this can be a positive. But a positive step is exactly how I see it. I've always said Billy will be home for Christmas, and strangely Yesterdays news has made those hopes only more believable. I need to believe that India has made a mistake, and that mistake will be put right before yet more damage is done. Hope to as many of you as possible in London. Thanks again for all the support.
