Why this petition matters

Currently, it is against BD/FEI rules to compete a horse at an affiliated competition bitless. I believe this needs to change.

In a world that is continually changing to create a better life for all animals, you are currently unable to compete your horse without a bit in its mouth.. you cannot use a kinder approach..

Many people ride bitless for a variety of reasons, whether that’s because you believe bits are more evasive or you have a horse who has had a bad experience  with a bit.

British Dressage have previously stated that « It is important that we have a level playing field for all competitors and this includes the tack and equipment permitted. » However, if you can ride and your horse can move to the same level, it should not matter if you remove an added piece of equipment.

They also stated that « one of the fundamental principles of dressage is the acceptance of the bit, » but much of the terminology of this relates to the acceptance of the bridle and near enough every standard textbook definition defines dressage as « The art of riding and training a horse in a manner that develops obedience, flexibility, and balance. » All of which can be achieved without a bit.
