The Issue

Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows has been my home town for my whole 27 years of life. In this entire time, our population has steadily rose, while the ambulance/crew's have stayed at 2. This in itself shows, that we as a community, have not kept up in protecting ourselves in our times of danger. I have brain cancer, and if I have a seizure or stroke, at the current rate, I could wait over an hour for an ambulance to get me to a hospital for treatment, which could cause irreversible damage or death. Personally, I feel like this is horribly inadequate for someone my age, but someone my grandma's age, it's a death wish. So I decided to do something about it, and try something, that I believe, every person in our community can get behind.       At 19 I was accepted into The University Of The Fraser Valley and was asked to choose my major...I had planned to become an Ambulance Attendant/Paramedic, until I saw that I would be starting at $11-$23 an hour...to save lives! Yet I could work at Red Robins, and make the same amount, to flip burgers!! When I realized this, I knew that whoever chose to be a Paramedic, chose because they were passionate about saving lives, and in no way passionate about the money.       This petition is specifically for step 1 of 3. The first step I have planned is this petition...to get one more ambulance and/or ambulance crew, for the cities of Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows. Langley has roughly the same population, and has 6 ambulances. Step 2 would be to acquire an "Advanced Life Support" ambulance, as the closest we have is in Coquitlam. The 3rd step would be to make the pay adequate for someone who saves lives for a living, and not flipping burgers!!!       If you agree that Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows needs 1 more ambulance, please  sign this petition saying that you agree, and request our government officials to make it happen! 100,000+ People and 2 Ambulances with 4 crew. ie: 1:25,000 "Community Paramedic" is a paramedic who is trained and works from a place of business/work where they can treat medical issues without having to bring patients to hospital...Problem: Someone who claims an upset stomach, has a heart attack 20 minutes after the initial call and dies.       "Single Crew Ambulance" is an ambulance with only one crew member...Problem: After pickup, in the middle of an intersection the patient's heart stops, if the paramedic goes back to attempt to restart their heart, then they're in the middle of an intersection not making their way to a hospital, or, they don't go back and the patient dies because there was on procedure done.                                                                                                                           "Kilo Car" is a 2 crew ambulance that is paid $2/hour for being on call, and when called they are paid full price. "Foxtrot Car" is a 2 crew ambulance that is paid $11-$13 to be on call, and within 90 seconds distance from having the ambulance out the door. "Advanced Life Support Ambulance"  is an ambulance that is full of extra appliances and the crew is trained in how to use them, as well as keep people alive better than a standard ambulance. When an ambulance is required for any and every overdose, and there was over 100 overdoses from October 1st till 65 days later, this puts a drain on our medical system. At the same spot there was 2 overdoses in 6 minutes, meaning that, there would be our only 2 ambulances, tied up for hours with these 2 overdoses, leaving anybody else in our community in dire straits. Wait times are supposed to be at 10 minutes for am ambulance to get to you, personally, I've had one show up in time, and one was 27 minutes...yet there has been claims of over an hour, to 2 hours. I've been contacted by several paramedics and dispatchers who feel that they wont speak up in fear of repercussions for their jobs. I have be told if changes are to be made, they'll have to come from the citizens/public, to local, provincial and federal government officials, which is exactly what I'm going to attempt to do!
