Main Avenue, Wavell Heights Traffic and Road Safety changes

The issue

We are here, as a community of local families, to provide enough evidence for Brisbane City Council and our local Councillor Adam Allen, to change the speed limit of Main avenue and to implement definite and proper traffic calming measures to ensure the local families and children living on Main avenue feel safe in their neighbourhood.

Main avenue links Sandgate road to Newman road and allows people to "cut" through.
Most of the traffic that use Main avenue are not local residents and seem to think it is an ideal route to speed and avoid traffic lights on Hamilton Road.
Main avenue is a small but long suburban street and not a very wide one.
A lot of families live here and so there are quite a few cars parked on the street.
Many cars have been damaged by drivers not respecting the speed limit, refusing the give way and side swiping parked cars. Most if not all of these dangerous drivers do not live on Main avenue.
The speed limit is 60km/h and there are only two signs that indicate this. On the corner of the Newman Road entrance and another down at the Bilsen road intersection. The latter is hidden up high by a tree.

Using a 24/7 security camera, we have thousands of hours of recordings of the street and two thirds of the vehicles travelling Main avenue do well over the 60km/h speed limit.
Some vehicles reaching speeds of 80km/h.

Many local joggers, mums with prams and people walking dogs frequently use this street and the local community do not feel safe.

This dangerous driving behaviour is completely outrageous and has now become a public safety concern for all families and children of this quiet suburban street.

We have made written requests to the Brisbane Council Council to implement traffic calming measures that include speed bumps or S bend islands, traffic speed signs and to reduce the speed limit to 50km/h but our requests have been refused.

We have now decided to create this petition to present to our local Northgate Councillor, Adam Allen, so he can help us push our requests to Brisbane City Council.

Please sign our petition so we can change the traffic on Main avenue and our families can feel safe again in their community.
