The replacement of Sam Thaiday as the Brisbane Broncos Deadly Choices Ambassador
This petition made change with 1,105 supporters!
The Brisbane Broncos partnership with the ever-successful Deadly Choices program was recently granted 1.6M by the Palaszczuk Government over the next three years. The Brisbane Broncos Deadly Choices partnership aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families. As the Ambassador, Sam Thaiday was the face of the Brisbane Broncos in this partnership. On Thursday 4th May 2017, Sam Thaiday made some offensive comments on the NRL Footy Show.
When asked "who was your first celebrity crush?" Sam responded with "I reckon Halle Berry was my first. That's when I went through my Jungle Fever phase - liking dark girls there for a little while. But then I found out, figured out, If it ain't white, it ain't right. So Adele maybe. She can sing. She is C-B-C as well. Chubby but cute."
This petition called for Sam Thaiday to be stood down and we commend the Deadly Choices program for doing so. Although said in jest, his comments are not befitting of a Deadly Choices Ambassador. These comments are detrimental to Indigenous issues such as Closing The Gap, as well as the place of women in our society.
On Saturday, the Deadly Choices Program publicly declared that they did not support Sam's comments. Channel 9 removed the video from the NRL Footy Show website. On Sunday, the Deadly Choice program announced that Sam Thaiday was no longer an Ambassador.
So, on behalf of our mob, and the women in our lives...This petition is to send a message to the Brisbane Broncos that misogynistic larrikin behaviour is not acceptable and is certainly not a Deadly Choice for our communities.
