Minnetonka Public Schools has a rich tradition of representing its community. Throughout its 70-plus year history we have been represented by three different mascots.  Starting with Oscar the Octopus, student pride was represented not with a living, moving mascot, but rather with a stationary stuffed animal. The choice of an octopus, while a very noble and lovable creature, strikes one as being odd given our lake-related geography.  More well known is our current mascot of "The Skipper".  The Skipper is certainly more fitting for a Minnesota mascot and has represented the district well for the majority of its existence.

However, there was a brief, but glorious period where Minnetonka Public Schools was represented by an animal that all who have been in our city and on our lake are acquainted with: the magnificent duck.  Skip the Duck was chosen by popular student vote as the official Minnetonka mascot from 1985-1989.  The authors of this petition have nothing against The Skipper or Oscar the Octopus, but rather see the great potential in our world-class district being represented by the exalted duck.
