Bring the Firebirds Home: Move UDC Athletics to the CIAA

**The Problem: A Firebird on an Island**
For too long, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) has competed in the East Coast Conference (ECC). While we respect our fellow ECC members, the reality is that our student-athletes are "on an island." Most of our conference opponents are located hundreds of miles away. This results in exhausting travel times for our athletes, which affects their performance not only in their sports but also academically. As a proud supporter of the UDC Firebirds, I see the potential for greater growth and success by joining the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), a prestigious conference for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

**Why CIAA is the Right Fit**
The CIAA would provide a more geographically suitable environment that reduces travel stress and costs, allowing student-athletes to focus both on academics and athletics. Moreover, the CIAA is renowned for its athletic excellence and rich history that aligns well with UDC’s mission to promote inclusion, diversity, and excellence. Joining the CIAA would also enhance UDC’s visibility and help attract new students interested in both academics and athletics, enriching our university community.

**Economic and Cultural Benefits**
Moving to the CIAA would not only benefit the athletics department but also have a significant impact on the university and surrounding community. With more local games and events, we could increase community engagement and support, boosting school spirit and local business revenue during athletic events. The rich tradition of the CIAA matches UDC’s goals to foster a vibrant and inclusive culture while providing economic opportunities.
