The Issue

Savoy does not have baseball or soccer fields suitable for children over the age of 11. Consequently, Savoy families commute 30 minutes plus to north Champaign or Rantoul multiple times a week for practices and games. Families with children that want to play competitively are burdened with this commute as early as age 5. Colbert Park offers an opportunity to relieve residents' time constraint, have their children be more involved in sports, increase our community bonds, and host tournaments/earn revenue (if desired).

Savoy leadership has done a great job of procuring funds to upgrade Colbert Park. One proposed plan was estimated to cost approximately four million dollars. With this amount of money, Savoy can build turf baseball and soccer fields and still have money for other upgrades. Turf fields are the trend for both sports as they require less maintenance, provide a more competitive playing environment, and can be safer for athletes. The popularity of turf fields is evident from the Rantoul Family Sports Complex and Emerald Acres Sports Connection in Mattoon.

Savoy leadership values community input, so please sign and send them a message if you would like to share your thoughts.
