Bring the Undertale 10th Anniversary Concert to the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando, FL!
The Issue
Orlando, FL, is not just “The City Beautiful”—it is home to Megacon, one of the largest comic book and pop culture conventions in the United States, generating millions of dollars and stimulating Central Florida’s economy annually. As someone who has personally went to this convention, Undertale fans make up part of the many attendees—I have even been friends with someone from this convention who was cosplaying Ink Sans, a fan-made Sans character.
The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, located in Orlando, FL, has hosted numerous events related to different fandoms. Some of these have included a Legend of Zelda symphony in 2016, a Sonic Symphony in 2024, and even some of the popular Hatsune Miku Expo vocaloid concerts. The 2016 Legend of Zelda concert was close to being sold out; last year’s Sonic Symphony concert was sold-out at the Dr. Phillips Center’s Walt Disney Theater (an event many fans of the blue blur looked forward to); and last year’s Miku Expo was sold-out. There is a lot of popularity and demand for such fandom-centered events.
Ten years ago, a talented man by the name of Toby Fox created an indie RPG where “nobody has to die”. That game is Undertale, and it has left a large impact in the gaming and fandom communities ever since releasing on September 15, 2015; it is a game with a unique storyline, lovable characters, and memorable quotes such as “You are filled with determination” and “Despite everything, it’s still you.” The music in Undertale is famous for its use of leitmotifs with elements of 8-bit, chiptune, and even orchestral elements. It evokes strong emotions in many fans of the game and it deserves to be heard live.
Almost ten years later, the legacy and impact of Undertale is still very much significant. Back in 2019, there was a concert series touring around the United States called Undertale LIVE. In fact, the world premiere in Chicago, IL, was sold out. There was certainly a positive reception as other locations came up, but unfortunately, some shows were postponed due to the rise of COVID-19; some later shows in 2021 were also postponed due to the Delta variant. There was even going to be a show in Boca Raton, FL, but something unexpected happened: excited fans were disappointed to find out that they were unable purchase any tickets for the show at some point. The show was canceled and those who purchased tickets got a refund.
Last weekend, London, England, got an Undertale 10th anniversary symphony concert. It was amazing to see on video, but I would love to see it performed live as seeing something on video is obviously not the same as going to actually see it in person. Various clips of this concert have also been featured on video-sharing platforms such as TikTok.
With the various fandom-related events that the Dr. Phillips Center has hosted, there would also be plenty of people who would love to see this venue host an Undertale symphony concert. Previous Undertale LIVE shows also have seen plenty of demand and popularity. As an Undertale fan, I believe other fans in or around the city of Orlando and Central Florida deserve something for 10 years of Undertale that would bring us together and foster the sense of community and belonging that this fandom has brought me.
With this, I ask Toby Fox, Fangamer, Materia Music, 8-4, and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to consider hosting an Undertale symphony concert.
