The Issue

HELLO BROOKLYN RED HOOK!

Brooklyn Trolley Initiative is a battery-powered, zero-emission transit service for the Red Hook community running inside the Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

BTI would:

  • Create dedicated access to Brooklyn Bridge Park for Atlantic Avenue residents.
  • Collect and deliver Cruise Terminal passengers minimizing car volumes.
  • Create an off-street express route through BMT from Atlantic Avenue to UPS.
  • Serve historic transit desert communities in Red Hook & NYCHA.
  • Integrate tracks into Red Hook Resiliency Plan upgraded street infrastructure.

Will you help bring the Trolley Dodgers back to Brooklyn?

TROLLEY DESIGN

Our sleek new Brooklyn Trolley in Dodger Blue created by design partners Gomaco Trolley Co.

BMT/CRUISE CONNECTOR

Route: Atlantic Avenue Terminal → Brooklyn Bridge Park → Brooklyn Marine Terminal → Red Hook.

RED HOOK LOOP

Preliminary route open for community discussion.

OBJECTIVES

  • Create clean, electric battery-powered, public transit.
  • Reach Red Hook historically underserved transit desert.
  • Transit support for new homes and residents.
  • Tourism vector for Brooklyn/Red Hook businesses.
  • Connect to Atlantic Avenue Terminal subways.
  • Waterfront connection to NYC Ferry stops.
  • A local hop-on-hop-off commuter solution.
  • STEM partnership with neighborhood schools.
  • Mitigate cruise passenger car traffic and pollution towards zero-emission port operations.
  • A more transit-oriented, less car-dependent city.
  • Become a vital part of growth and visitor appeal of Brooklyn/Red Hook waterfront.
  • Direct access for Atlantic Ave residents to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • Promote Brooklyn’s trolley history & civic pride.

WHAT ABOUT IBX & BQX?

Neither route will reach Red Hook. This still leaves the community a transit desert. (MTA subway construction is not feasible due to flood zone).

MITIGATE CRUISE SHIP TRAFFIC

Standard volume for the MSC Meraviglia is 400-600 vehicles inbound per hour from 7am until 11:15am, tapering down to 200 vehicles when it ends at noon.

89% of passengers travel to/from terminal by car.

Max passenger count plus crew count of 6,636 is about 2/3 of the population of Red Hook.

The cruise terminal has never delivered economic benefits to Red Hook. It's time it did!

COMMUNITY VOICES

"We support an historic trolley service through the Brooklyn port district as part of a permanent, non-residential working waterfront, mitigating cruise passenger car traffic and its pollution, while continuing to celebrate the industrial history of the Port of the City of New York." – Red Hook Business Alliance.

Note: Track not to run on congested Van Brunt, not overlapping service with B61 bus.

•••

"Can't wait to see these in Brooklyn." – Columbia Street Waterfront.

‘In the ever-evolving tapestry of New York City, few neighborhoods exemplify the rich interplay of history, culture, and community quite like the Columbia Street Waterfront District in Brooklyn.

Preservation does not mean halting progress; rather, it involves guiding it in a way that respects and enhances the existing community. Thoughtful urban planning can integrate new development with the preservation of historic sites, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. Enhancing public access to the waterfront, promoting green spaces, and supporting local businesses are all ways to foster sustainable growth that benefits both current and future residents.’

•••

"I hope we can work together to revitalize a piece of history, while also giving new-age scholars an opportunity to engage in the past for their economically stable future." – Damiano Mastrandrea, Ed.D., CTE Director.

The Brooklyn STEAM Center can foresee potential collaborative efforts in several ways, including:

  • Paid internship opportunities to work across all of our industry sectors in relation to the project.
  • Utilize the service to connect young people with a newly accessible part of their community.

Through a program that focuses on CAD, renewables, fabrication and engineering, scholars engage in real-world engineering to problem solve, create and learn.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Brooklyn Dodgers got their name from a disparaging remark made in a Manhattan newspaper claiming Brooklynites were just a “bunch of trolley dodgers.”

TROLLEY SPECS (REPLICA)

OTHER URBAN TROLLEYS

PROJECT FUNDING

A collaborative effort involving community, city and state stakeholders committed to preserving Brooklyn’s history, promoting sustainable transportation options, and enhancing the city's urban environment.

INDIRECT BENEFITS

The benefits of a streetcar system can be massive. The benefit to communities of having people on the trolleys and frequenting the businesses is exponentially greater than the revenue generated by fares.

CHERISH BROOKLYN HISTORY

"A good strategy for bringing back neighborhoods is reusing our existing structures, the ones that made us great in the past.It is a labor of love to do so; it requires vision, passion and courage." – National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers.

WHO WE PETITION

Eric Adams - Mayor of New York City

Daniel Goldman - U.S. House of Representatives, 10th district.
