Bring 'The Mitchells vs. the Machines' back to cinemas!
The Issue
Released in 2021, The Mitchells vs. the Machines has garnered a great following, with many considering it to be one of the best animated movies of all time. With fantastic animation, great voice acting, and a story which is genuinely compelling yet hilarious at the same time, Mitchells certainly deserves that reputation! Unfortunately, however, the movie has suffered a great injustice which I feel needs to be rectified...
It is a sad, yet true, fact that many have never been able to see the movie in cinemas. As the distribution rights were sold to Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie mostly bypassed cinemas for a streaming release. That's not to say it hasn't been shown in cinemas, as there have been a few limited releases of the movie (one being a very limited run conducted a week before the Netflix release in April 2021 and the other being a two-day event release conducted by Iconic Events in November 2021). Even then, only a select few American cinemas have actually hosted such showings and many countries (including here in the UK) haven't seen a theatrical release at all. This is even more unfortunate, in my opinion, as I feel that a movie with such a distinct style would be absolutely perfect for the big screen! Director and co-writer Mike Rianda, who also voiced the character of Aaron Mitchell, knows this and promised in a tweet posted around the time of the November 2021 event release that there could hopefully be more showings in the future.
As such, I am creating this petition in an attempt to convince Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation into organising a wider cinema release of The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Even if it is still a limited release, I would love to see the movie play in more cinemas around the world. If this happens, I am certain that many fans of the movie (including myself) would be extremely happy to see it in a proper auditorium!
